If a situation where you find yourself constantly annoyed by bad habits of your kids sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many parents have to deal with bad behavior and awful habits of their kids. These habits can be something very simple i.e. not brushing teeth before going to bed or something serious i.e. stealing or behaving bad in front of guests. There are number of ways to teach your kids about appropriate behavior and you can also help them learn how to change bad habits. A behavior chart is one of the many tools that are used by parents and teachers to modify and improve behavior problems in kids. It is a simple and very useful award system where the kid gets some kind of reward or prize as positive reinforcement every time he does something good.

The most important thing about a behavior chart that kids might find attractive is the reward system. When a kid understands that as soon he does something he is supposed to, he will get appraisal and reward; this positive reinforcement will motivate him to continue on the path of behavior modification. As a parent or teacher, you need to make sure to include the rewards that your kids like or would want. The rewards not only portray the likes and dislikes of the child but also the preferences and age requirements as well.

Common types of Behavior Charts:

  • Sticker chart
  • Chose chart
  • Daily behavior chart
  • Weekly behavior chart
  • Routine chart

Guidelines for making a Behavior Chart and using it effectively:

Choosing Habits to Modify:

Although no one wants to see himself in a situation when they have to modify or change several behaviors and habits in a person i.e. a child but it happens more often than you might think. The important thing to keep in mind is to focus on just one or at least less than 5 behaviors at once. Dealing with modification of more than 5 behaviors can be challenging. Once you are sure about the number of behaviors to change, it’s easy onwards.

Choose Reward Giving System:

Next thing in setting up a behavior chart would be to decide what rewards you want to give to the child. This can be something simple i.e. just a tick mark on the chart that shows the child did something positive or something more interesting i.e. some sticker that the child can collect for bigger rewards.

Include Bigger Rewards:

If you have very young child, simple rewards i.e. candy or ice cream can be enough but when you are dealing with children above 7 years of age, rewards like trip to local zoo or amusement part or eating at a restaurant would be more appropriate. This can easily be done by asking the child to just collect smaller rewards and then you can give them bigger rewards in return. For instance, for eating at a restaurant the kid needs to collect 10 stars.

Set up Realistic Goals:

The most important thing while preparing a behavior chart is the factor that the goals you set up for your child should be achievable and realistic. The goals that you decide to achieve should be simple and easy in the beginning and once the child is used to the fact that he has to change some behaviors and modify some of his habits, you can start working on some complicated issues as well.
