Guidelines to Prepare a New Apartment Checklist:
- Things to consider before moving in:
When you have a new apartment, there are lots of areas to focus mainly before moving in. Starting with the rental agreement that you need to sign with the landlord or owner of the apartment and finalizing the date to move in. For instance, if the agreement states that you will move in on 5th of next month, your rent will start from that date even if you move on 10th or 15th of that month. In the same manner, when you give evacuation notice to the landlord and specify that you will evacuate on 5th of next month, you need to move your stuff before that date or the landlord will deduct penalty amount from your security deposit.
- Initial inspection/evaluation of the apartment:
As soon you sign the agreement and have the lease on the new apartment, the first thing is to visually inspect the new place. This way you can ensure if there is any repair work required or if the bedroom is big enough to fit a bed and cupboard. Only after the inspection you should start the moving process.
- Making categories for essential items:
A checklist is beneficial only if you use it to full extent. For instance, one of the important elements of a moving checklist is to divide the stuff you want to move into categories. General categories include; bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom, laundry, kitchen pantry, home appliances and clothing items. Within each category, there must be dozens of items i.e. in the bedroom category, you can list bed, side tables, lamps, mattress, rug, closet, blanket, pillows and pillow cases and bed sheet. Once the list is completed, next thing is to check which items you already have and the items that you need to buy. You can either make purchase item list on the same checklist or create a separate list of the items to be purchased.
- Settling in the new apartment:
Once you actually start the moving process, start with the essentials that you will need in the new apartment in case you might end up staying for a night or two at the new place. In this process, firs thing to move is the bedroom furniture or at least the mattress with some pillows and a blanket. Then move to the kitchen essentials and move couple of utensils for temporary stay. The bathroom should also have some soap and toilet paper. The items from your attic or storage area should be the last on the move list as you won’t need them immediately after relocation.
- Steps to follow after moving:
There are good chances that once you move in a new apartment, you will find couple of repairs required for comfortable stay. For instance if there is some problem with the garbage dispenser that you didn’t know earlier, you need to get it fixed and there should be a separate checklist to inspect various items and areas after you settle in the new apartment. After everything is done, maybe the last thing on agenda is to organize a party and invite your neighbors for a housewarming party.
